Pause the roll out of Universal Credit
To Esther McVey
Why is this important?
Universal Credit is a scheme that replaces lots of different benefits. But it’s been riddled with problems since it was first trialled. It’s seen families relying on food banks, people forced onto the streets, even, in some cases, deaths. There’s mounting opposition to Universal Credit, including influential Conservative politicians speaking against it. Let’s make sure the government doesn’t roll out a system that:
- Makes people worse off when they transition on to it
- Has sanctions that are proven not to work
- Leaves people waiting for weeks before receiving the money they need to survive
